SCORE Entrepreneurial Support

December 2017

With their unparalleled self-discipline, drive and focus, veterans make ideal entrepreneurs. In fact, veterans are 45% more likely than non-veterans to be self-employed, and own 9.1 percent of all U.S. businesses. For veterans interested in becoming their own bosses (or growing their existing small businesses), SCORE is a key resource.

SCORE is the nation’s largest network of volunteer, expert business mentors, and was founded in 1964 as a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The organization has since educated more than 10 million current and aspiring U.S. small business owners through mentoring, online offerings and local workshops.

Many veteran entrepreneurs have found success with guidance from SCORE. When retired Air Force Maj. Gary Peterson started a used-car dealership in 2013, he turned to SCORE for help with his business plan and strategic direction. A SCORE mentor helped retired Air Force Lt. Col. Tom McMahon negotiate a favorable lease for his boutique gift shop. Army veteran Larry Curell started his business in 2009 with help from SCORE, and now works with the U.S. government and military, plus big-name companies like AT&T and General Electric. Small Business Mentoring

SCORE offers free, confidential small business mentoring at 300 chapters nationwide and remotely via phone, email and video chat. Online Resources
SCORE provides numerous free online resources for entrepreneurs, including webinars, virtual conferences, and a daily blog. SCORE’s weekly webinars cover a range of how-to topics, such as online marketing, budgeting, and business planning. Webinar registrants can watch the session live, or a view a recording on their own time. You can see a list of upcoming SCORE webinar titles at, and explore our past webinar recordings at

In addition to our regular webinars, SCORE hosts a bi-annual Small Business Success virtual conference. The free online conference simulates a real-life conference experience, offering expert-led educational sessions, one-on-one business mentoring and networking chatrooms.

Business owners can also benefit from SCORE’s daily blog, which explores the latest business topics and trends, written by business experts and influencers. View the blog archives at, where you can also find a variety of tools and templates (e.g., Business Plan Template for a Startup Business, 12-Month Profit and Loss Projection).

Local Workshops
Many local SCORE chapters hold free or low-cost in-person workshops covering myriad topics (e.g., “Simple Steps to Starting Your Business,” “Owning and Operating a Franchise in Miami,” “How to Start a Restaurant and Food Truck Business,” etc.). Find in-person workshops near you at

Finally, SCORE mentors regularly help run Boots to Business and Boots to Business Reboot, organized by the Small Business Administration (SBA). These training programs cater specifically to veterans who are interested in starting their own businesses.
